What We Draw

Illustration made entirely by hand

From first sketch to final artwork — we draw illustration that solves real problems of story, audience, and visual direction.

✏️

Editorial Illustration

Hand-drawn from first sketch to final artwork — editorial illustration shaped around the story, the page, and the audience. Made to carry a piece, not just decorate it.

🖋️

Bespoke Commissions

A limited number of custom commissions each year, sketched to brief, developed through review, and finished to your specifications. For projects that deserve something made entirely for them.

📖

Publishing & Print

Cover art, interior illustrations, and full picture-book sequences — hand-drawn, reviewed across multiple rounds, and delivered in the formats publishers actually need.

📐

Creative Collaboration

Collaborative work with art directors, designers, and brand teams — illustration shaped to a concept, with the same hand-drawn care as every other commission.

Our Approach

Four principles behind every piece

We don't just draw shapes. We make illustration — guided by four principles that define how we think, what we make, and how we finish every piece.

These aren't marketing words. They're the criteria by which we evaluate every decision, every composition, and every line we send out of the studio.

01

Elegant

Drawn with restraint — every line considered, every excess removed. Elegance is the result of discipline, not decoration.

02

Crafted

Measured by what carries the work. Every line and composition is tied to how the piece will actually be used.

03

Personal

Drawn around the project it lives in — its story, its audience, its tone. Nothing is generic by default.

04

Classic

Every piece is sketched, refined, and reviewed before a single final line is committed. Made to outlast the brief.

Who We Serve

Drawn for the people who use it

We work with individuals, publishers, editors, and creative teams who share a commitment to illustration made with care — not volume.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often from clients, publishers, and those considering a commission.

What does hand-drawn mean for Lily Cho Design?
Every piece begins as a pencil sketch on paper — not a generated draft, not a traced template. Hand-drawing at the start of a piece means the composition, line, and detail are considered before anything is committed. The result is illustration where every mark has a reason, and nothing is there by default.
What kinds of projects does Lily Cho Design take on?
We take on editorial illustration, publishing commissions (covers, interiors, picture books), brand and packaging illustration, and bespoke private commissions. Because the studio is small and every piece is hand-drawn, our slate at any one time is limited. If a project is a fit, we'll say so honestly — and if it isn't, we'll say that too.
How do I commission a bespoke piece?
Bespoke commissions begin with a consultation — in-person or remote — where we discuss your project, audience, and visual direction. From there we produce hand-drawn sketches for your review, move through revision rounds, and finish the piece to your specifications. Lead time is typically four to eight weeks. We take a limited number of commissions at any one time.
How do usage rights and licensing work?
Usage rights are agreed up front as part of the commission. We're transparent about what you're licensing — which territories, which media, for how long — and we'll quote against the actual usage rather than a one-size-fits-all rate. Original artwork remains with the artist unless explicitly purchased.
What formats do you deliver final artwork in?
Final artwork is delivered in the formats your project actually needs — high-resolution TIFF or PNG for print, optimised PNG or SVG for digital, layered files where the project calls for it. We'll confirm the deliverables in writing before work begins so there are no surprises at the end.
Where is Lily Cho Design based?
The studio is based in Australia. We work with clients across Australia and internationally — most of the commission process happens remotely (briefs, sketches, reviews, final delivery). In-person consultations are available by appointment for clients who'd like to meet in studio.
What happens if the artwork isn't quite right?
Every commission includes structured revision rounds — that's the point of working through sketches before final artwork. If something isn't landing during sketch review, that's the moment to redirect, and we expect to. Once final artwork is approved and delivered, additional revisions are scoped and quoted separately.
